Your complete guide about De Quervain's tenosynovitis

De Quervain's tenosynovitis affects the tendons of your wrist. It occurs when the tendons around the base of your thumb get swollen. The swelling causes the sheath covering to become inflamed, which puts pressure on nearby nerves and causes pain and numbness. You can treat De Quervain's tenosynovitis at home at earlier stages.

Symptoms:

·         Swelling near the base of your thumb

·         Numbness along the back of your thumb and index finger

·         A catching or snapping feeling whenever you move your thumb

·         A squeaking sound as tendons move within the swollen sheaths

Risk factors:

·         More likely to develop in women

·         If you are 40 years old or above

·         If your hobby or job involves repetitive hand or wrist moments

·         In case of a hand injury, scar tissue can restrict the movement of your tendons

·         If you are pregnant, hormonal changes during pregnancy can cause it

·         If you have arthritis

Home treatment:

·         Apply ice or heat to the affected area

·         Take anti-inflammatory drugs that include ibuprofen and naproxen

·         Avoid activities that cause pain and swelling, especially those with repetitive hand and wrist moments

·         Wearing a splint 24 hours a day for 4 to 6 weeks to rest your thumb and wrist.
