5 Simple Exercises for De Quervain's Tenosynovitis

 Do you know what is De Quervain's Tenosynovitis? It is an inflammatory condition that causes pain at the thumb side of the wrist. De Quervain's Tenosynovitis affects the wrist where the base of the thumb meets the forearm. Strengthening exercises are considered one of the best treatments for it. 5 Simple Exercises for De Quervain's Tenosynovitis


  1. The first exercise is thumb lifts. This is an easy exercise and you don’t need any equipment for it. Place your hand on a flat surface, palm facing up. Rest the tip of your thumb at the base of the fourth finger. Repeat this exercise 8-12 times.


  1. Rest the affected hand on a table, palm up. Touch the top of the thumb to the little fingers. 


  1. Squeezing a soft rubber ball can strengthen the grip. Hold the ball and squeeze it with the affected hand.


  1. Place an elastic band around the fingers and thumb. Move the thumb against the resistance of the band. 


  1. In Wrist extension, you can extend your arm and palm facing down. Hold a small weight and slowly bend your wrist up and back. Do 2 sets of 15, and it will help in reducing the pain. You will also feel the stretch at the back of your hand and wrist.  


Exercise can help in decreasing inflammation, improving function, and preventing recurrences. Regular exercise will show improvement in 4-6 weeks. If your wrist does not show any improvement then you should consult a doctor.
