All You Need to Know About De Quervain's Disease

De Quervain's tendinosis happens when the muscles around the base of the thumb get inflamed. The word "tendinosis" refers to the bump of the muscles. Swelling of the muscles, and the muscle covering, causes pain and soreness at the thumb side of the wrist. This is mainly visible when forming a fist, holding something, or turning the wrist.

Causes

De Quervain's disease is caused by overuse. It also is linked with pregnancy and rheumatoid disease. It is common in middle-aged women.

Symptoms

Signs of De Quervain's tendinosis:

·         Pain is felt over the thumb side of the wrist. This is the main symptom where the pain appears either slowly or suddenly. You can feel the pain in the wrist traveling up the forearm. The pain is generally worse when the hand and thumb while used. This is particularly true when forcefully holding objects or bending the wrist.

·         Swelling is seen over the thumb side of the wrist. A fluid-filled cyst in this region accompanies this swelling.

·         A "catching" or "cracking" sensation is felt while moving the thumb.

·         Pain and swelling make it difficult to move the thumb and wrist.

Treatment

The goal of treating de Quervain's disease don't to relieve the pain caused by swelling and irritation.

Non-surgical treatment

Splints. Splints are used to rest the thumb and wrist.

Anti-inflammatory medication. These medications are taken orally or injected into a muscle compartment. This helps reduce swelling and relieve pain.
